2018 – The Shit You Should Really Focus On
How quickly does time fly by these days?
A few weeks ago, I walked my big 5-year-old down for his first day of Primary School. It feels like such a short time ago that he was a tiny baby in my arms in the hospital. I took the day off work so I could focus solely on him and his big day, rather than constantly be thinking about the pile of work I had to get back to or the phone calls I should be making. I wanted to this day to be special – for both of us. It’s not every day your first born starts school. It would have been easy to work from home or do a half day, but when I thought about it, I realised I would never be fully present for him unless I took the day off completely. It was the best decision I have made. All my energy and focus was on him, how he was feeling, how I was feeling and how exciting this new chapter was for all of us. This is something I don’t do enough of – just being in the moment and enjoying it for what it is without thinking about everything else that is going on.
This year, that’s what I want to do. Be present more. Less mental focus on work when it’s family time. Less worrying about shit that really doesn’t matter and certainly isn’t going to change with me worrying about it and more focus on me, my happiness and my joy as well as those who I love most. And if any of you are feeling the same, then I have a bit of a plan to kick-start us…
Here’s what to focus on this year to really make it your own:
What are your BIG dreams? Dreams give us a sense of purpose. They light us up from the inside when we think about them and they can give us the fire we need when times aren’t great. I want you to stop and think about what your big dreams are. One of my big dreams is to start running Wellness Retreats with Kelly at This Life in Full Bloom. Finding a beautiful beachside location, in a big house and a group of amazing, determined women who we lead through a journey of wellness, joy, and happiness. It will include healthy cooking classes, exercise, meditation and personal development exercises. This is my big dream that has me daydreaming and smiling each day. What’s yours? What little steps can you take to bring that dream closer to you?
This year I want to make more time for my family – more one-on-one time with each of my children and also my husband. Put work to the side and focus on family – just like I did today for the start of school. Whenever old people are about to die, you don’t hear them getting excited about how much work they did. If anything they have regrets of not spending enough time with their loved ones. Carve out the time where all work-related activities are switched off and you focus purely on the ones you love. Do more activities rather than giving gifts, cook together and make it a task of laughter and love, put some music on and dance or sing really badly. Whatever it is, do something that makes you all smile together and feel the love between you. Just last weekend, I sat out on our deck with my two boys with the stereo playing. We danced and sang (pretty badly, but wholeheartedly) and my oldest even made his own set of drums to bang in time with the music. It was such a special moment.
Stop putting everyone else first to the detriment of yourself. My own health over the last two months has seriously deteriorated because I was stressed out, overworked and not taking time out to rest and recharge. This has resulted in a number of sinus infections, a lack of exercise and a lack of nutrition (even though that’s what I help other people with!) I realised that I was doing too much for everybody else and not enough for myself – working a full time stressful corporate job, running a small business (which I love!), taking care of my family (which I love too!) and everything else in between such as social events and chores! Enough is enough! As of one week ago, I have resigned from my corporate job which was pulling me in too many different directions at once and moving into another more stable one that doesn’t require my attention when I’m at home. Making this one (HUGE) change has already changed my mindset and will allow me to focus more on me – exercise, meditation, relaxation and doing things I love to do.
You know how I mentioned one of my goals is to start running retreats with Kelly? Well, this I believe is going to fall into the category of making more fun. It will not only be fun for me, but it will be fun for the amazing group of women who come on that journey with us – delicious healthy food, basking in beautiful surroundings, time to relax and be with ourselves and learn new strategies to incorporate it into everyday life. De-stress, detox, laugh and have FUN! In addition, I want to be silly with my kids, play like I’m a child again too. Run around at the playground with them, go on bike rides, make silly faces at each other and laugh until our stomachs hurt. Can you remember the last time you laughed so hard your stomach hurt? That’s what you need to find again!
I believe if I put my focus on these four things this year, then magical changes will occur and I also believe the same will happen to you. I don’t know exactly what those changes will be, but I’m excited to find out!
